About the Network+ exam

Network+ is the exam that decides whether you can troubleshoot a network you did not build. It sits deliberately below any vendor track: rather than teaching one vendor's command syntax, it tests whether you can reason from a symptom to a layer to a cause. That is why it remains a common prerequisite in job listings even at organizations standardized on a single vendor.

The N10-009 revision rebalanced the exam toward operations and troubleshooting. Network Troubleshooting is the heaviest single domain at 24%, with Networking Concepts close behind at 23%. Roughly a quarter of the exam is therefore a structured diagnostic exercise: you are handed a failure description and asked what to check next.

The exam runs up to 90 questions in 90 minutes with a 720 out of 900 passing score. Candidates who struggle usually know the vocabulary but have never practiced applying a troubleshooting methodology under time pressure, so they guess at causes instead of narrowing systematically.

Timings assume consistent weekly study alongside full-time work. Adjust the length, but keep the order.

    Concepts and subnetting

    Weeks 1-3

    Drill subnetting daily until it is automatic, and anchor every protocol you learn to its port and its OSI layer.

  2. Phase 2

    Implementation

    Weeks 4-5

    Cover routing, switching, wireless, and media types. Hands-on practice, even in a simulator, pays off disproportionately here.

  3. Phase 3

    Operations and security

    Weeks 6-7

    Work through monitoring, availability, and the security domain together, since both are largely definitional.

    Run timed scenario practice until you apply the methodology by reflex rather than by recall.

Mistakes to avoid and strategy that works

Common mistakes

  • Leaving subnetting until late in preparation, which slows every practice exam taken before that point.
  • Learning protocols without their port numbers and OSI layers, then having to reconstruct both mid-question.
  • Skipping the troubleshooting methodology as common sense when it is directly examinable and heavily weighted.
  • Over-investing in the Network Security domain, which is the lightest section at 14%.

Exam strategy

  • Identify the OSI layer implied by a symptom before considering any answer choice.
  • For troubleshooting questions, decide which methodology step the scenario has reached, then pick the action belonging to the next step.
  • Treat stated constraints such as distance, bandwidth, or existing cabling as the deciding factor in implementation questions.
  • Flag subnetting-heavy questions and return to them once the faster definitional questions are banked.

Network+ FAQ

Should I take Network+ or go straight to CCNA?

Network+ is vendor-neutral and lighter; CCNA is deeper and Cisco-specific. If your target employer runs Cisco equipment and you already have solid fundamentals, CCNA carries more weight. If you are still building fundamentals or want portability across employers, Network+ first is the lower-risk path.

How much subnetting is on the exam?

Enough that weakness here is disqualifying. Subnetting appears directly and also underpins troubleshooting and implementation questions, so it is worth front-loading in your study plan.

What is the passing score for Network+?

720 on a scaled range of 100 to 900. As with other scaled exams, the raw number of questions needed varies, so aim comfortably above the equivalent in practice rather than at the boundary.
